Acciona, SA, (BMAD: ANA) is a Spanish conglomerate group dedicated to civil engineering, construction and infrastructures.

The company was founded in 1997 through the merger of Entrecanales y Tavora and Cubiertas y MZOV. The company's headquarters is in Alcobendas, Community of Madrid, Spain. The company's U.S. operations are headquartered in Chicago.

Acciona is controlled by chairman José Manuel Entrecanales and his family through Grupo Entrecanales.

The company can trace its origins back to MZOV, a firm founded in 1862.

In 1978 MZOV merged with Cubiertas y Tejados, a business founded in 1916, to form Cubiertas y MZOV.

In 1997 the company merged with Entrecanales y Tavora, a firm founded in 1931, to form NECSO Entrecanales Cubiertas S.A.. It was subsequently renamed Acciona.

Major projects involving the company have included the Torre Europa completed in 1985, the Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong completed in 1998), the Gare do Oriente in Lisbon completed in 1998, El Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe completed in 2000, the German Chancellery completed in 2001, the King Abdullah University Hospital completed in 2002, the Alqueva dam completed in 2002, and the El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía completed in 2005.

Acciona Trasmediterránea

Acciona Trasmediterránea is part of the Acciona group. It operates passengers and cargo ferries between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, northern Africa, and Portsmouth in the UK.

The Trasmediterránea ("cross-mediterranean") company was constituted on November 26, 1916 with the fusion of the companies of shipowners José Juan Dómine, Vicente Ferrer, Joaquín Tintoré and Enrique García, though it didn't start operating until January 1 of following year. It was hearquartered in Barcelona and had a fleet of 45 ships.

During the Spanish Civil War, its ships were used as auxiliar navy ships by both sides of the conflict.

In 1978, it became a state-owned company, until it was privatized by the PP government in 2002. The SEPI sold the company to a consortium that consisted of Acciona Logística (60%), Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo, Compañía de Remolcadores Ibaizábal, Agrupación Hotelera Dóliga, Suministros Ibiza and Naviera Armas. Later, the company changed its name to Acciona-Trasmediterranea. Currently it operates a fleet of 25 ships and its headquarters are in Madrid.

From 1921 to 1998, when the sector was liberalized, it had the monopoly on the lines that linked the mainland Spain with the islands and northern Africa. Today, even as it has lost its monopoly and has competition, Trasmediterránea its still leader in its sector.

Trasmediterránea has its own maritime stations in Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Valencia.

Acciona Energy

Acciona Energy, a Spanish company, develops and manages renewable energy projects, including small hydro, biomass, solar energy and thermal energy, and the marketing of biofuels. It also has assets in the field of co-generation and wind turbine manufacture. As of 2007, it is carrying out research projects to produce hydrogen from wind power and to manufacture more efficient photovoltaic cells.

As of 2007, Acciona Energy is the largest developer, owner and operator of wind farms in the world, with 164 wind farms in nine countries representing over 4,500 megawatts (MW) of wind power installed or under construction. Acciona Energy is also the developer, owner and operator of Nevada Solar One, the world's first solar thermal plant built in more than 16 years, and the third largest facility of its kind.

Eurus Wind Farm

The Eurus Wind Farm, located in Juchitan, in the Southern Mexican State of Oaxaca, is under construction and will have a total installed capacity if 250 megawatts (MW). It will have 167 wind turbines built by Acciona Windpower, each with 1.5 MW of capacity. The wind farm represents an investment of US $550 million by the Spanish company Acciona.

The project has created more than 850 jobs during the construction phase and will have a local economic impact equivalent to 20 million Mexican pesos per year. The first phase will be operational in the first quarter of 2009 and the last phase will be completed in the last quarter of 2009. As of February 2009, 25 turbines have been installed.
