I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! is a reality television show produced by ITV Productions for the ITV network in Britain. In it, celebrities live in jungle conditions with few comforts and have to earn human essentials. ABC aired one season of an American version in February and March 2003. In Germany, a fourth season of Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus! aired in January 2009 (the third season was won by a British man). There is a French version called Je suis une célébrité, sortez-moi de là!.
The main UK show is hosted by Ant & Dec. In the U.S., John Lehr presented; the German hosts are Dirk Bach and Sonja Zietlow.
In return for their appearance celebrities nominate a charity to which Granada Television make donations. The celebrities are paid a fee (reported to be £25,000 for UK competitors) to compensate for loss of earnings. The producers keep the details of contracts private. The money is raised by allowing viewers to vote, by phone, text message or TV interactive service, for the celebrity to complete a "Bushtucker Trial" – a physical task usually involving snakes, spiders or other animals – and, later each series, for the celebrity they would like to see win . The last celebrity, after others have been evicted, is the winner and named King or Queen of the jungle.
Winners of the show are: Tony Blackburn in 2002, Phil Tufnell in 2003, Kerry Katona in 2004, Joe Pasquale also in 2004, Carol Thatcher in 2005, Matt Willis in 2006,Christopher Biggins in 2007 and Joe Swash in 2008 (UK); Cris Judd (US); Costa Cordalis, Désirée Nick, Ross Antony and Ingrid van Bergen (Germany); Richard Virenque (France); Mariann Falusi, Andrea Keleti (2008, Hungary).
Controversy over voting arose during the sixth series of the show when Toby Anstis was eliminated. It was revealed that both he and EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney had polled the bottom two amount of votes and that viewers had to vote again to save their favourite of the two. However many fans argue that this was not made clear. In the following days, The Sun ran an article that revealed Toby's eviction had been the result of a mix-up which happened on the interactive "red button" vote – people normally use this to keep their favourites in the show, but it asked which one they wanted to vote out instead of in. When ITV bosses realised their mistake, they shut the service down, but Toby's eviction sparked fury amongst fans.
CBS, broadcaster of the popular American reality show Survivor, unsuccessfully sued ABC and Granada TV over the programme, alleging similarities. Given the poor ratings of the show in America, leading to only a single U.S. series being produced, the failure of the lawsuit proved moot.
10 contestants, aired nightly February 19, 2003 - March 5, 2003 on ABC. John Lehr was host.
NBC will pick up the former ABC show and have it premiered on June 1st at 8pm. It will air for 15 episodes. It will follow the UK's format. The hosts are rumored to be Ant & Dec.
Je suis une célébrité, sortez-moi de là! is the French version of the series. The series contained just French celebrities with no foreigners. The series follows the same version as their English counterparts however instead of the jungle being located in Australia it is instead broadcast from Teresópolis Brazil, and aired on French terristeal channel TF1. Season One started in April, 2006. The shows hosts are Jean-Pierre Foucault and Christophe Dechavanne who are their to provide light relief.
The title for the Dutch version is Bobo's in the bush, "bobo" is popular slang for a rich and influential person.
The Hungarian title is "Celeb vagyok... ments ki innen!". The shows hosts are Balázs Sebestyén, János Vadon and Lilu.
Series 1 premiered 6 October 2008 on RTL Klub and ended 22 October 2008. It is shot in Argentina. There are ten contestants in reverse order of elimination. Bottom was the first out. Top was the winner.
Following on from the huge success of the first series, a second series launched on 27 October 2008, just five days after the final of series one.
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! (Series 8 UK)
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! returned to ITV for an eighth series from 16 November 2008 to 5th December 2008. Ant & Dec returned to present the main show on ITV, whilst Matt Willis, Emma Willis and Mark Durden-Smith returned to host spin-off show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here... Now! on ITV2. It is the first series to use a redesigned logo, which symbolises the Hollywood Sign. The winner of this series was Joe Swash.
The show begun with 10 celebrity contestants. On 19 November 2008, they were joined by two new contestants - David Van Day and Timmy Mallett - who were 'kidnapped' on their way into camp, making a total of 12 contestants.
Openly gay ex-Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Metropolitan Police and politician, who studied secondary education at Sutton Grammar School for Boys. He is often seen washing naked. Was the Liberal Democrats candidate in the last Mayor of London election. He was voted out of the camp on Day 17.
Personal trainer currently based in Cobham, Surrey and Chelsea midfielder-footballer Joe Cole’s fiancée. She entered on the first day and was the third person to be voted off the jungle, on Day 13 - when announced it might be her she mimed the words "don't be me". In the camp she became very good friends with page-three model and fellow WAG Nicola McLean, who she wanted to win.
Television presenter and singer who formerly dated Manchester United FC footballer Ryan Giggs. In 1989, Dani Behr had a cameo appearance in Grange Hill and then later was a presenter on the late night Channel 4 music show, The Word, for five years. She went on to feature in over 30 TV shows, including The Big Breakfast, Hotel Babylon, Ice Warriors; and in 2002 the co-presenting role alongside Joe Mace on the first series of the BBC's flagship children's program The Saturday Show. Dani was the second celebrity to be voted off on Day 13.
Former singer in the bands Dollar and Bucks Fizz. Van Day, along with Timmy Mallett, were the two late entries into the jungle on Day 5 after being 'kidnapped' on their way into camp. During the series, both Van Day and Mallett were viewed as outsiders. Van Day was a particularly controversial character in camp because of his strong opinions. Van Day was voted out of the jungle on Day 20, the penultimate day before the final.
Journalist and television presenter. who is best known for her long stint in That's Life! and her child protection activities as founder of the charity ChildLine. She is a Commander in The British Empire, CBE. On Day 14 in camp, Brian Paddick accidentally started a fire in the bushes and she rushed to it, to put it out quickly, constantly repeating that she had done a 21-year consumer TV show and a course on fire safety, after the fire was put out the other camp-mates mainly Nicola McLean and Martina Navratilova mocked her. Esther was voted out on Day 16 (30th November 2008 ).
George is an American actor of Japanese descent best known for his role in the TV series Star Trek, in which he played the helmsman Mr. Sulu on the USS Enterprise. Most recently, he played Hiro Nakamura's father Kaito Nakamura on the NBC television show Heroes. Takei has also been the announcer for The Howard Stern Show since January 2006. Takei revealed in an issue of Frontiers magazine that he is gay and has been in a committed relationship with his partner, Brad Altman, for the last eighteen years. George competed in two Bushtucker trials. Campmate Joe Swash developed a good friendship with George, saying that he is full of stories to keep the day more interesting, and that he feels Takei is like a grandfather to him. George took third place in the show, and left camp on Day 21 along with fellow finalists Joe Swash and Martina Navratilova. He revealed that after the show ended, he and Joe would stay friends and that George would visit him in London.
Actor who played Mickey Miller in the television soap opera EastEnders. Swash was voted to do the first two Bushtucker trials by the public. His younger sister is Shana Swash who also played his on-screen sister in Eastenders. Dani Behr and David Van Day dubbed him to win the title of King Of The Jungle this series and he did on December 5th 2008.
Former World No. 1 women's tennis player. Martina turned a professional tennis player in 1975, and retired in 2006. On Day 14 in camp she eventually cracked at David Van Day saying that he thinks he is the "Queen of the Camp", not doing anything to help out except 5 minute jobs here and there. She took part in three Bushtucker trials, one of which was said to be 'perfectly suited for her' in which she had to jump across a line of Mini Coopers hanging in mid-air over a swamp, finding stars in the process. She was voted runner-up against Joe Swash on Day 21.
Page Three model, Daily Star cover girl, WAG and television star. McLean is engaged to Peterborough United football player Tom Williams. The couple live in a six-bedroom house in Wexham, Buckinghamshire and have a two-year-old son called Rocky. Nicola has failed her driving test seventeen times. During her time in the camp, she had a very bad relationship with fellow contestant David Van Day and started several arguements with him. Carly Zucker became good friends with her in the jungle, and Carly dubbed her to win. She was voted out of the jungle on Day 18 (2nd December 2008).
Simon Webbe originally started his career with British boy-band Blue and then went on to become a successful solo artist. Simon was also one of the two first celebrities in the trial that decided which group of celebrities got the best and worst camps; he lost this trial and he and his group were put into the worst camp, the "away camp". He was injured in the second Bush Battle, the "Hog Roast", to gain immunity from being the first celebrity to be voted off. To prevent unfairness, he still gained immunity, along with Carly Zucker, who was battling with him, and he was therefore removed from public voting for the first vote-off. He was dubbed this year's "quiet campmate", as he did not want to get involved in the rivalry between Nicola McLean and David Van Day. He left the jungle on Day 19 and tipped Martina Navratilova or Joe Swash to win.
Timmy is a TV presenter and broadcaster who achieved cult status in the UK on Manchester's Piccadilly Radio and then later on TV-am. Mallett married his wife Lynda in 1990. Their son, Billy, was born in 1992. They live in Cookham, UK. Mallett is most notable for his striking visual style, involving loud shirts, comedy glasses and the giant pink foam mallet, labelled Mallett's Mallet that he carried with him, sometimes hitting children on the head, as well as his 'utterly brilliant!' and 'bleurgh!' catchphrases. He entered the jungle on 19 November 2008 as a late entrant, along with David Van Day. His high pitched laugh annoyed Robert Kilroy-Silk during the live Bushtucker trial 'Jungle Gym'. He continued to laugh more, seemingly just to annoy fellow campmate Nicola McLean. During his time in the jungle, he had a strong friendship with fellow campmate David Van Day. Mallett lost his place in the jungle on 30 November after being beaten in a head-to-head Bushtucker trial called 'Last Chance Saloon' with Brian, who then went back to camp.
Which group lived in which camp was decided by the first Bushtucker Trial. As Joe won, his group moved in to Home Camp, whilst Simon's group moved into Away Camp. The two camps competed in Bushtucker Trials, with the winning camp receiving better food.
Home was the better of the two camps, featuring a London Bus for the celebrities to sleep in. Contestants in Home camp received British food if they won head-to-head Bushtucker Trials. Meanwhile, the celebrities in Away Camp were forced to sleep on the jungle floor, and received Australian food if they won trials. There was also a jail in away camp for 'naughty' celebs.
On 18 November 2008, the two camps merged. The celebrities in the Away Camp moved into the Home Camp. The merger was due to take place on the morning of 19 November 2008, however it was brought forward after a storm left the Away Camp flooded.
The contestants take part in daily trials to earn food.
Note 1: Due to Joe's win, his Team went to the best camp (Home Camp) as the prize. Note 2: It was a live trial for the first time this series. Also for the first time the other celebrities got to watch. Note 3: Esther was ruled out of this trial due to medical reasons. Note 4: Simon was ruled out due to an injury to his back received in the Bush Battle, Hog Roast. Note 5: The two bottom place celebrities in the vote-off went head-to-head in the trial. The loser would go home and the winner would return to camp and be immune from the next vote-off.
Just like Series 7, some celebrities will be granted immunity from the first vote-off. The 5 winners of this prize will be decided by five 'bush battles' (one winner in each.) Each of the 12 celebrities will compete in one of four battles, each containing 3 campmates. The winners will automatically gain immunity while the second-placed contestants will compete for a final place in the fifth and final bout. In the end, there were six winners due to a problem in the second battle. This feature replaced the 'Celebrity Chests' for five episodes.

He entered the jungle on Day 5 of the show, after being voted by the public to take part in a live trial, ahead of Malandra Burrows. He was eighth person to be voted out, leaving the jungle on Day 18.

The two teams competed in Bushtucker Trials for food, and in Celebrity Chests for treats and other luxury items. The final head to head trial was to win immunity from the first elimination. The girls won, meaning the men faced the public vote. Toby was eventually evicted.
The first competitive Celebrity Chest, contested between Matt & Scott of Team Base Camp and Lauren & Phina of Team Snake Rock ended in controversy when Scott and Phina fought over the chest, resulting in Phina biting Scott.
Note 1: For the trial, Scott had to dance to 10 songs whilst bugs were dropped on his head. Scott danced to one song before shouting "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me out of Here!". This is often touted as the worst ever performance in a Bush Tucker Trial.

Note 3: The public voted for Phina to take part in the trial. She was allowed to choose the second person to take part. She chose Jason.
Note 4: Upset at the prospect of taking part in the Trial, Jan was allowed to take one campmate to the trial for support. She chose Jason.

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! (UK)
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! is a UK reality television show in which celebrities live in jungle conditions with few creature comforts. The show is filmed live in Australia and broadcast on the ITV network. It is sponsored by UK supermarket chain Iceland, with Kerry Katona (series 3 winner) and Christopher Biggins (series 7 winner) featuring in Iceland advertisements.
The main show is hosted by Ant & Dec, with a subsidiary behind-the-scenes show hosted by Mark Durden-Smith, Emma Willis & Matt Willis.
In return for their appearance on the show the celebrities are asked to nominate a charity to which the producers, LWT (weekend shows) and Granada Television (weekday shows), make donations. The celebrities themselves are also paid a fee (reported to be £25,000 for UK competitors) to compensate them for possible loss of earnings while they are in the jungle. The producers of the show keep the precise details of the celebrities' contracts very private, prompting much speculation from the tabloid media. The money is raised by allowing viewers to vote by phone, text message or the "red button" (a colloquialism popular in the UK for TV interactive services) for the celebrity they would like to complete a "Bushtucker Trial" — a physical task usually involving snakes, spiders or other creepy-crawlies found in the jungle — and, later in each series, to vote for the celebrity they would like to see win the show. The last remaining celebrity after all others have been evicted is the winner of the show, and is branded King or Queen of the jungle.
The programme is filmed in Springbrook National Park, Gold Coast, Queensland.
Entering the filming location, there is an open area allocated with temporary buildings for onsite medic, etc. plus containers for storage of props, etc. It is in this area that family and friends of the Celebrities bide their time each morning during evictions awaiting the fate of their loved ones. From this area you enter a restricted access road which climbs to where the temporary studios are situated. The road then heads down into a valley via fourwheel drive access to the set of the show.
Some of these areas are viewable from Google Earth however it is difficult to view the suspension bridges and open air studio that Ant & Dec broadcast from. While the roof of the main building is bright red, when filming is out of season this whole area is covered with hessian to minimise viewing from the sky.
The creeks and camp areas are situated directly below the main suspension bridges. With being so close to the celebrities, crew have to be careful during filming to keep voices and music down.
Many of the bush tucker trials are not done here. In fact, some are done well away from the area.
The Park has a hotel attached minutes from the camp where crew and family members stay but once out of the jungle the Celebrities stay at the opulent 6 star Palazzo Versace hotel at Southport, situated on the northern end of the Gold Coast and a drive of approximately 60-90 minutes from the jungle.
The finals of the second and third UK series were seen by 12.73 and 14.99 million people respectively — well over half of all people watching television in the country at the time of day in both cases. The site in which the celebrities stay appears to be open to the elements but is largely covered by sheets above the view of the cameras. In an episode of the British show, a celebrity had to swim in a swamp apparently infested with crocodiles. Marksmen were shown ready to shoot the animals if they attacked. Although nobody seems to realise it, the area where this is filmed does not have crocodiles anyway, because it is too far south.
I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! Now is a behind the scenes programme. It is broadcast on ITV2 following the main show on ITV1.
Seres 1 (2002) the show was presented by Louise Loughman, an Irish TV Presenter. From series 2 (2003) to 4 (2004) the show was presented by Mark Durden-Smith and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. Tara Palmer-Tomkinson returned in 2005 to present the show for it's fifth run, however Mark Durden-Smith decided to spend time with his new twin babies. He was replaced by Matt Brown.
Brendan Burns was initially supposed to present the show for series six in 2006, however he left after three episodes. This led to Mark Durden-Smith returning for the rest of the series, Durden Smith presented from the UK. New presenters Kelly Osbourne and Jeff Brazier presented from the jungle in Australia.
Since Series 7 the show has been hosted by Mark Durden-Smith in the UK with series 6 winner Matt Willis, and Willis' wife Emma Willis in the jungle.
