Stolt-Nielsen (OSE: SNI, NASDAQ: SNSA) is a Norwegian-Luxembourgish shipping and seafood company. The company has two main subsidiaries, Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group and Stolt Sea Farms. The company has its headquarters formerly in London although most of its operations are in Rotterdam, it is listed on Oslo Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

Stolt-Nielsen Transportation Group (SNTG) is one of the world's largest parcel tanker companies with 130 ships and eight terminals. SNTG has 4,700 employees.

Stolt Sea Farms is a fish farm producer of turbot and tuna. From 2005 the salmon, trout, halibut, tilapia, cod, sturgeon and caviar operations were merged into Marine Harvest.

Stolt-Nielsen started in 1959 as Parcel Tankers Inc. with a chartered ship. By 1963 the company had opened offices in Oslo, Norway; New York, USA and Japan and was operating 18 ships. In 1971 the first storage terminal was acquired and in 1972 Sea Farms (then not part of the Stolt-Nielsen Group) was founded. In 1988 the company issued an initial public offering on NASDAQ. In 2005 Stolt-Nielsen sold Stolt Offshore and in 2006 Marine Harvest.

Niels G. Stolt-Nielsen

Niels G. Stolt-Nielsen (born January 23, 1965) is a Norwegian business leader. Since 1996 he has served as director of Stolt-Nielsen S.A., a trans-national seafood company, and since 2000 he has been the company's chief executive officer, taking over after his father, Jacob Stolt-Nielsen. He has a BS degree in Business and Finance from Hofstra University in 1990. He joined Stolt-Nielsen S.A. in 1990 beginning as a shipbroker and then as a round voyage manager.

The company Stolt-Nielsen willingly entered The United States Department of Justice amnesty program in January 2003, on condition that it fully disclose to the government the operating activities of its competitors and partners. The result of this disclosure led to two companies, Odfjell og JO Tankers, admitting to illegal price fixing and subsequent fines and criminal charges were handed down. Shortly after, the DOJ, in an unprecedented move, rescinded its amnesty and withdrew from the agreement in March 2004, notifying Niels G. Stolt-Nielsen and his father Jacob Stolt-Nielsen that they were individually also targeted by this action. Stolt-Nielsen responded through filing civil complaints against the government arguing that the DOJ had illegally breached its contract with Stolt-Nielsen by withdrawing amnesty. The resulting trial in 2005 ruled unanimously in favor of Stolt-Nielsen and its executives and issued injunctions restricting the DOJ from indicting the company and found that the DOJ had not provided sufficient proof that Stolt-Nielsen was in breech of contract .

The indictment against Stolt-Nielsen, its subsidiaries, principals and employees was dismissed by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia PA on or about 21 December 2007.

In 2001 Niels G. Stolt-Nielsen notified Norwegian authorities that he was living abroad having his residence in London. He then stopped paying taxes in Norway. The tax authorities contested this in 2001, however due to a clerical error Stolt-Nielsen's assertion was accepted for the 2002 - 2004 tax returns. In 2005 this error was discovered. The tax authorities were subsequently sued by Stolt-Nielsen. In a lower court ruling in November 2007 Stolt-Nielsen lost on all counts as the court noted that he had a permanent residence at Frogner in Oslo as well as a country home, private airplane, bank accounts and club memberships whixh combine to attest a strong connection to Norway.

Jon Fredrik Baksaas

Jon Fredrik Baksaas (born 1954) is the CEO of Telenor.

By education, he received a siviløkonom degree from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration and has additional academic management training from IMD's Programme for Executive Development (PED).

He joined what is now Telenor in 1989 and was appointed CEO in April 2002 after serving as deputy CEO since 2001.

Before joining Telenor he worked in Aker ASA, Stolt-Nielsen Seaway and Det Norske Veritas. He is also a member of the board of Svenska Handelsbanken.

MS Stolt Surf

The MS Stolt Surf was a Chemical tanker, operated by Stolt-Nielsen Inc. She achieved a measure of infamy when she was struck and damaged by a rogue wave, an event that was photographed by a crew member and subsequently added to the ongoing debate over the possibility of such waves out in the deep ocean.

Built in 1970 at the yards of Eriksbergs, of Gothenburg, Sweden, the Stolt Surf joined the merchant fleet of Stolt-Nielsen Inc., one of the largest operators of parcel tankers in the world. She served for seven years without major incident.

The Stolt Surf departed Singapore on 4 October 1977, on a routine voyage across the Pacific Ocean to Portland, in the United States. A storm was brewing out in the Pacific. The advice from the weather routing agency was to keep far to the north, to avoid a developing storm to the south. Despite being contrary to his experience and instinct, the Stolt Surf’s Captain Oddenes decided to follow their advice. This proved to be a mistake, when by 20 October the Stolt Surf encountered an enormous hurricane. Whilst battling through waves in excess of the usual 10 metre height, she encountered at least one 'freak wave', which towered above the tanker, reaching a height of at least 22 metres and rising above the height of the bridge deck. Several times waves crashed over the bridge itself. Chief engineer Karsten Petersen took a number of pictures of the storm, which recorded several features distinct to freak waves, namely deep troughs and waves so tall that they break.

The breaking wave crashing onto the deck and superstructure of the Stolt Surf caused considerable damage. Three of the tank hatches and the door to the pump room were torn off, despite their strong construction. The pipelines running across the decks were bent and the gangways were tossed over the deck and wrecked. Steam pipes and electric cables were torn and ruptured, whilst the wave smashed a number of windows and port holes. Flooding entered the ship, smashing the furniture and tearing off bulkhead panelling. Despite the severe damage, there were no serious injuries, and only one sailor was subsequently hospitalised. The Stolt Surf was fortunate in that her engines remained operational, and the ship was able to remain heading into the waves. Had she lost headway, the storm would have forced her to turn sideways into the oncoming waves, where she risked being hulled or capsized, particularly if she encountered another rogue wave. The Stolt Surf limped into port a week later on 26 October. The Stolt Surf’s name was perpetuated in a new tanker built for Stolt-Nielsen and launched in 2000.

The evidence in the photographs, showing abnormally large waves out in the deep ocean, where science, using the linear model had predicted that such extreme waves were extremely rare, to the extent that a 30 metre crest to trough wave would occur only once every 10,000 years. The proof gathered by the Stolt Surf joined a growing body of evidence that the linear model did not adequately explain all of the types of waves that could be encountered. The loss of the MS München in a storm in the North Atlantic the following year was attributed to an 'unknown event', but was later considered to be one of the first losses that could be confidently attributed to a freak wave. Despite this, it was not until the separate encounters by the cruise liners Bremen and Caledonian Star in the South Atlantic, that the possibility of nonlinear causes of freak waves was seriously considered. The resulting theories helped to explain the possible causes of the freak waves encountered by the Stolt Surf.

The company started as the Haugesund based Stolt Nielsen Seaway and offered divers for the exploration of the North Sea in 1970. The company was part of the Stolt-Nielsen Group. In 1989 the company expanded to Aberdeen and in 1992 the company acquired the French diving company Comex Services. In 1997 the company won its first ultra-deepwater contract off West Africa, resulting in the acquisition of Houston based Ceanic Corporation, Danish NKT Flexibles and ETPM of France.

In 2000 the company changed its name to Stolt Offshore. But poor management forced the company to narrow its focus and a new management was introduced in 2003. In 2005 the Stolt-Nielsen Group sold its ownership in the company and listed it on the Oslo Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. As of 1 March 2006 the company changed its name to Acergy.
